Dog supplies news: Soldier backs Staffordshire bull terrier campaign

A soldier whose job involves giving dog supplies to Staffordshire bull terriers has spoken of his love of the breed.

In his role as an army dog handler, it is Colour Sergeant Greg Hedges' job to dole out dog supplies such as dog food.

One of the serviceman's favourite canine companions in recent years has been Watchman V, a Staffordshire bull terrier.

For this reason, Colour Sergeant Hedges has announced his backing for an RSPCA campaign geared towards dispelling myths about the breed, which has gained an unfavourable reputation in recent years.

Although they need their owners' "full attention", the soldier said that Staffies can bring joy into animal lovers' lives.

"They are fun, loving animals, can be great with people, loyal, and can make absolutely marvellous family pets," he commented.

RSPCA inspector Tony Woodley added that the way people have treated Staffies has changed, rather than the animal's behavioral tendencies.

Although they have struggled with an image problem, Staffordshire bull terriers were still the most popular breed among people rehoming dogs from the RSPCA last year - more than 500 left the charity's kennels.

I totally agree that they are getting a bad wrap and they shouldn't be. It seems that most of the style of dogs that people think of as dangerous and not family friendly are mostly that way because of their owners. You can get a pit bull or rottweiler that are very friendly and great for families. The better you treat your dog, the more qualitycanine supplies you give them and the better training you give them the overall better behaved and enjoyment the dog will give you.
