Homeless man accused of stealing three pit bull puppies (updated)

A homeless man living on the streets of Lowell allegedly stole three pit bull puppies from a Bridge Street home last month, according to arrest warrants.

Christopher Allan Lowery, 23, allegedly took the puppies from an enclosed dog fence in the backyard of Kerri Marie Welch on Aug. 17, according to arrest warrants. The dogs have a value of $100 each.

A Lowell Police officer spotted Lowery on railroad tracks with the dogs on Aug. 17 and questioned him, said Capt. Scott Bates.

Lowery claimed a friend had given him the dogs. When the officer took Lowery back to the Bridge Street residence the owner denied giving him the dogs.

“We actually retrieved the dogs back for the owner,” Bates said.

When the officer turned to question Lowery again he took off running and was not immediately caught. Lowery turned himself in around 11 p.m. Thursday, Bates said.

Lowery faces three counts of larceny of a dog and charges of trespassing on railroad right of way and resist, delay and obstruct an officer.

Lowery was booked into Gaston County Jail on Thursday under a $25,000 bond.
