Pit Bull Happenings Rescue: About Us!

We are a Pit Bull Rescue headquartered in Pasco County, Florida. We rescue abandoned, neglected, abused, "stray" dogs throughout the entire state of Florida as well as dogs in Florida high kill shelters. We then give the dogs the needed medical care and love they so deserve and will place them for adoption. We only adopt our dogs out within the state of Florida (except for Miami-Dade County). All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, current on all shots/vaccinations (rabies, annuals, bordetella), micro-chipped, heartworm tested (if negative current on heartworm prevention, if positive we will treat), and we will cover all preexisting conditions, etc.

We were founded on October 15, 2010 by our President, Eric Emminger. Eric has a true love and passion for dogs and especially for the American Pit Bull Terrier. His very first rescued dog was Freedom... She was rescued in September of 2001. Freedom was an ambassador who changed many minds and perceptions of Pit Bulls. She past at the ripe ole age of 16 on October 30, 2013. A few years after rescuing Freedom from an abandoned house, he rescued Freeway off a major highway in Brooksville, Florida. At this time he was still independent and not associated with any other rescue organizations. It was in 2008 that he joined with another local rescue group. He fostered many dogs for this rescue and was also the owner surrender coordinator. Well, the more involved he became with this rescue, the more disappointed he became and was wanting to do right by Pit Bulls and the rescue thereof. He resigned and had decided to start up his own rescue, hence Pit Bull Happenings Rescue was founded!

Since our founding, our support has been overwhelming and very much appreciated! Many dogs are now in their adoptive homes... forever. We have comprehensive policies all for the betterment of our dogs. We are unique and we are leading by example on what rescue is about. Our focus remains solely on the dogs, period. As much as Pit Bulls are discriminated in society, we do not and will not discriminate. We have rescued in addition to the many Pit Bulls, we have rescued hound dogs, boxers, rhodesian ridgebacks, german shepherd dogs, and many mixes. Some question why a "Pure breed rescue" rescues other dogs... well, the answer is simple. We don't discriminate. We hold education paramount in our rescue and we have a point to be made... the American Pit Bull Terrier (the one and true Pit Bull) shares a lot of characteristics with a lot of other different breeds of dogs. We have created a disclaimer that better explains this, "Visual breed identification has proven to be inaccurate and unreliable! In addition, canine DNA testing is relatively new and none to our knowledge test for the American Pit Bull Terrier (the one and true Pit Bull) making DNA testing unreliable and inaccurate. The fact is, unless you know the history, lineage/parentage, etc. we shouldn't be labeling the dogs with inaccurate info to the adopters, general public, and others. The dogs we rescue from shelters come from an unknown background and most of our owner surrenders we take into our Rescue, the owners are unable to prove their history. Further more, several different breeds share similar characteristics as the American Pit Bull Terrier. Therefore, we are unable to guarantee the predominant and precise breed for our dogs! We will call our Dogs the American Pit Bull Terrier when we know the lineage/history. We judge our Dogs on their own individual behavior and personality!" Today's society is calling upwards of 30 different dog breeds (and the mixes), a Pit Bull and to us this is a huge injustice to the American Pit Bull Terrier. It seems society and humans have a need to label everything whether or not it is accurate or not.

We are a private and independent rescue organization. We are a federally recognized 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization. We are a growing group of Volunteers who are dedicated to and passionate about rescuing dogs in need. We are currently a Foster Home based rescue meaning our dogs live with our families. We will always have an in-house Foster Home network and soon hope to have an actual facility.
