Momma Savannah and her Puppies!
Momma Savannah and her Puppies have all been to our primary Full Service Animal Hospital for an initial check up! All, surprisingly are relatively healthy. Mom was a little under weight and all needed de-wormed. They are all going to be fully vetted which inclueds being spay/neutered, shots and vaccinations (Puppy booster is a set of 3 shots each times that by 5 pouppies equal 15 shots), bordetella (kennel couch vaccine), rabies shots, and microchips. This will all add it up very fast so, we need your help! Every dollar is needed and very much appreciated!
Here is the story with this wonderful family:
Momma Savannah and her puppies (3 week old at that time) were all rescued from a High KILL Shelter... Her owner was incarcerated on unrelated charges... Momma Savannah was frightened and scared for her babies. She was in a new place... she was confused, not sure what was going on or what to expect... As any good mother, her maternal instincts kicked into high gear... She was going to protect her puppies from the strangers... Momma Savannah felt trapped, she was in a kennel with her babies. She was then deemed "aggressive" and was said that she "will bite" (For the record. to this day she has not bitten anybody or another animal).
Well, two "Rescues" (one of which is well established and well known) had placed their names on the puppies and intended on leaving Momma Savannah behind which she more than likely would have been killed by the shelter. Once we learned of this, we acted without hesitation! We contacted the Director of Animal Services and asked him outright if we are willing to rescue the entire family (Mom and her 5 puppies) would our interest trump the other two "Rescues"? and he said, "Absolutely!" We then told him we want the entire family and we'll be there the next morning to get them. We saved Momma Savannah and her 5 babies from the high kill shelter as well as saved the 5 puppies from being stolen from their mother. It's very important that puppies stay with mom as long as possible as they learn so much from their mother... plus, they receive so much better nutrients from mom's milk compared to that of formula...
This is Momma Savannah... approximately 20 minutes after we rescued her from the Shelter. She's with our Founder and President, Eric Emminger... She doesn't seem to be "aggressive" nor did she "bite". She was simply doing what any good mother would do... protect her babies! The moral of the story is that a Shelter environment is NOT the place to access ANY dog for it's true temperament... especially a nursing mother! We are proud to have a track record of not testing dogs for their temperament in a shelter. We do NOT allow other people's observation and even temperament testing assessments and evaluations to decide if we should rescue a shelter dog or not! The shelter in no way, shape, or form is the proper place to test these animals! You simply can't get an accurate and true assessment in the shelter environment!
